It’s what all art has in common.
From the beginning of mankind’s existence we seem to long to share stories. They have the power to change how we see the world around us.
Stories are our history.
As filmmakers we are this generations greatest story tellers. Therefore we need to understand what makes a story and how to tell it.
We need to take storytelling seriously.
There are many different ways to tell a story.
The most commonly used methods in film is the Monomyth by Joseph Campbell. He describes the basics of it as “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: The hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”
What ways have you learned to tell a story? What tools have you used?
Ultimately the best way is just to do it. Go out and write.
Gather your friends and tell them a story. Write a script then go out and use your cell phone or DLSR and film it. Then put it on youtube for the world to see.
Go shoot something.
